Farming Past & Present
Luppitt is a farmed landscape, made up of Grade 3 and 4 agricultural land, much of it steep or poorly drained. In the mid twentieth century there was a mixed farming economy of many small farms producing milk, meat, and wool.
Within living memory however, some farms have amalgamated and expanded, whilst many farm houses, barns and other buildings have become residential dwellings. The number of commercial farms reliant on the farm business has reduced from forty to fewer than ten, with a number of larger and smaller non-farming holdings letting their grazing or running as smallholdings.
Only two dairy farms remain in the parish as others have switched to beef or sheep production. These changes, together with modern agricultural practices and more efficient machinery, have combined to reduce the number of local people engaged in agriculture.
